FASTPITCH HISTORY

Who Started This?

Dot Wilkinson of the Phoenix Ramblers from 1933 to 1965 is widely regarding as the greatest catcher of the early era. Without protective gear, Dot brought a ferocious and aggressive style to the game and became the pioneer for how the position is played.

HOW WE GOT HERE

1930s-1960s: The Plate Blocking Era where catchers focused on hand speed and durability with minimal glove padding and basic masks. Physicality and blocking the plate were priority as gritty catchers put their bodies on the line to protect home.

1970s-1990s: The Evolution of Gear due to a primary focus on commanding the field and deterring baserunners.  Form-fitting shin guards and throat protectors allowed catchers to set up closer to home plate.

2000s-Present:  The Total Package Era introduced the idea of catchers becoming elite pitch-framers along with power hitters and field generals.  Analytics, high-mobility tech and specialized mitts led to the one knee down stance in order to place catchers in the best position to frame.
